Sailors in offshore sailing races, can be subjected to extreme physiological and mental stress. For instance, in the Volvo round-the-world race, they sail 9 legs of the race in 9 months with just a couple of weeks rest in between the different legs.

This presents challenges nutritionally, as studies on races in 93-94 and 97-98 have shown, with results that were, in many ways, astonishing: These results revealed that sailors had a very high energy turnover, causing catabolic problems and losses of specific nutrients, which had deleterious effects on body composition as well as both mental and physical performance during and after the race.

The Volvo ocean race of 2001-2002 therefore provided an ideal opportunity to test the effectiveness of Nutri Pharma's products, especially NutriBar, in providing nutritional support during an endurance sporting event.



The 12-strong crew of the DJuice Dragons boat were studied over three legs of the race, with Nutrilett and NutriBar being added to their diet after the first leg.

From this trial, it was clear that supplementation with NutriBar during this race diminished the expected loss in the dry-weight lean body mass after leg 1 as well as diminished a fat gain, suggesting health and performance benefits for the crew
